To “hold it fast” - this, “have and keep” the Word of God. Just as Jesus said. To “abide” in his word. That if you don’t you dry up; wither away; dead. Are cut away as dead branches. Gathered up and cast into the fire. Jesus said this plainly already in John 15:1–8

Asked you to look unto him. That’s what he said. Did you forget? Said: “LOOK UNTO ME, AND BE YE SAVED ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH: FOR I AM GOD, THERE IS NONE ELSE.” That’s COMPLETE. A “finished” work he wants done, because, HE. ASKED. FOR. IT. That’s what he wants.
So, the “Key Point” is Jesus Christ.
To ‘bring to one’s mind something or someone from the past which is the Word of God. To live by every word that proceeds out of his mouth. That’s the “works of God,” that, we took, today, live by every word proceeds out of his mouth, just like those in Sardis.

“Watchful” takes “practice” [actually apply or use of an idea, belief, or method, [the Word of God] as opposed to theories relating to it.]. So, instead of actually applying or use the Word of God, YOU:
So, the first thing God asks those in Sardis that have his name is to remember what they already received and heard, which was the Word of God, just like he says to EVERYBODY, to the very ends of the earth to: “LOOK UNTO ME, AND BE YE SAVED ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH: FOR I AM GOD, THERE IS NONE ELSE.” - God. It’s INCOMPLETE without you look unto him. You do, it’s a work that he wants that’s COMPLETE. And? All “Complete” in the dictionary means is, you don’t have to add to, or take away anything from it. It’s Perfect. Because he makes up the lack. He’s God.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
And, Revelation 3:3 says:

SO: “Watchful” has a way to have you “strengthen that which remains” the Word of God in you, and, it remains for eternity, so why are you picking up things that don’t, to “walk” after, to “walk in” and look unto those instead, when LIFE is in what he says.
